Michael Jackson - A Career Bigger Than Life
Truly one of the world's all-time superstar Acts, Michael Jackson was a talented singer, dancer, songwriter and music producer. Jackson topped the charts singing with the Jackson 5 and as a solo artist. Thriller, released in 1982 is still the best-selling album in history.
Jackson's career started as the lead singer for his family group, the Jackson 5 in the 1960s. Michael first joined the group at five years of age. The group reached success in the late 60s and early 70s after being signed by Motown. The Jackson 5 opened for the Supremes in 1969 and had their first #1 single, I Want You Back in late 1969. This success was quickly followed by more, including The Love You Save, ABC, and I'll Be There.
Jackson left the group at age 13 to start a solo career and reached incredible heights with #1 songs from his albums, Thriller, Off the Wall, and Bad. Jackson's first solo single hit the charts in 1971 and his first #1 single was Ben, which topped the charts in 1972.
Jackson continued to perform with the Jacksons, as the group was now known throughout the 1970s. In 1982, Jackson joined Paul McCartney in singing The Girl Is Mine. The song was an instant success and Jackson included it on Thriller in 1982. Seven Top 10 hits came off Thriller and the album was the best-selling album ever.
In 1983, Jackson sang Billie Jean during a TV special honouring Motown and debuted his famous Moonwalk. While Jackson produced and starred in several music videos, the most elaborate video he ever did was for Thriller, the album's title track. Directed by John Landis, this music video featured horror-tinged scenes, special effects, and a voice-over by Vincent Price.
The Thriller video boosted the sales of this already successful album sky high, keeping the album on the charts for 80 weeks. It held the #1 spot for 37 weeks and earned 12 Grammy nods and 8 Grammy wins.
Over the following years, Jackson would earn worldwide accolades for his music but was never comfortable in the spotlight. He built his fantasy retreat in the late 1980s called Neverland. Here he put up an amusement park, kept exotic pets, and sometimes allowed children's events.
Jackson's career began to decline in the mid-1990s and continued a downward spiral until his death in 2009 at only 50 years old. Jackson was a tremendous talent with a gentle personality. Two albums were released following his death, Michael and Xscape. Both were worthy tributes to his genius and earned accolades with singles in the charts.
